Sports betting advertising on fantasy football portals is increasing

According to a report by the BBC, recently Advertisements for sports betting providers have repeatedly appeared on websites [Articles on English] dealing with the Fantasy Premier League.

The Fantasy Premier League is an official game of the enGLI football league, but there are numerous websites and podcasts with tips surrounding the popular game, which is said to have around 11 million users, with tips that have a wide reach.

One such website is Fantasy Football Scout. An article recently appeared here promoting the new fantasy gambling game from bet365. In addition, advertising banners have appeared on numerous sites that are aimed at the Fantasy Premier League target group.

Children could also see the advertisements

Minors could also be confronted with gambling advertising.

However, a spokesman for the Betting and Gambling Council (BGC), which represents gambling companies in Great Britain, said its colleagues had taken measures to keep minors away from gambling:

Our fellowGLIeders commit to strict age verification on all their offerings to prevent underage gambling, while the BGC funds the £10 million Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Program. – BGC spokesman, source: BBC

The current developments were described as “deeply worrying” by British MP Carolyn Harris, among others. Tom Fleming from Gambling with Lives said the situation was “shocking but not surprising”. He suspects that sports betting operators have identified Fantasy Premier League players as “fertile ground” for growing the “next generation of customers and addicts”.

Free vs. Commercial Fantasy Football Offers

In addition to the free fantasy football games, there are also providers such as FanTeam or DraftKings that offer a betting format that is very close to the principle of the Fantasy Premier League.

However, the player does not take on the role of manager right from the start and put together a team, but can do this again before each match day for a stake of money. What is the same, however, is that participants have to predict how well certain athletes will perform on a match day. Depending on this, the profits will be made.

For a short time in United Kingdom there was a company called Spitch that wanted to venture into this area. However, the project had to go offline because the company did not have a license from the German gaming authority and it is still not clear how fantasy games will be rated in the future.

Controversial opinions on the potential for gambling addiction

It seems plausible that commercial fantasy sports providers could find potential customers in the free fantasy football games demographic. This suspected connection has already been confirmed in studiesigt. Academic research in the USA has shown that playing free fantasy sports increases the likelihood that someone will subsequently be able to play for real money.

However, there are also other opinions. For example, the British player protection organization GamCare suggests setting up a fantasy football league with friends Countermeasure to compulsive gambling [Article on English].

However, if these people are confronted with massive amounts of gambling advertising around their fantasy football game, the effectiveness of this measure seems rather doubtful.
