Gambling market on the rise

Sales on the legal gambling market in United Kingdom are loud DHS Yearbook Addiction 2023 in 2021 increased by 14.6 percent to 53.4 billion euros compared to the previous year. The economic growth is primarily due to the sports betting segment, which alone generated 18.3 billion euros in gross gaming revenue in 2021 - an increase of 409.6 percent compared to the previous year.

The DHS attributes the sharp increase in the legal market to the legalization of sports betting as part of the new State Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV), which came into force on July 1, 2021.

On the other hand, the casinos and moneySpielautomaten would have had to accept burglaries. The effects of the corona pandemic caused a decline in both segments. Revenue fell by 59.3 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year.

In addition to gambling, the DHS addiction report also looked at alcohol consumption in GermanyIGT. Although this has declined, 7.9 million Germans are still consuming alcoholic beverages in a way that poses a health risk. When it comes to the amount of alcohol consumed in this country, the Federal Republic is far above the global average.

People gamble less

Overall, there was lower participation in gambling in 2021, according to the DHS addiction report. Around 29.7 percent of 16 to 70 year olds in the Federal Republic took part in some form of gambling. In 2019 it was 8.0 percent more.

The authors of the report paid particular attention to games of chance with supposedly high addictive potential - such as sports betting, slot machines and online casino games. A relatively low participation rate was observed in all segments last year.

Around 3.3 percent of the total population bet on sporting events with fixed odds, while 2.0 percent each gambled on moneySpielautomaten and in online casinos.

Player bans are increasing

With the new GlüStV, the OASIS player blocking system was installed, which enables self-blocking. 106,869 people would have made use of this in 2021. Casinos accounted for around 43.3 percent of the blocked rates. The remaining breakdown includes sports betting (29.1 percent) and arcades (22.3 percent). Compared to 2020, the number of bans would have more than doubled.

The OASIS player blocking system is part of the new GlüStV and is intended to increase player protection and reduce the risk of gambling addiction through nationwide and cross-game blocking. On the one hand, people with suspicious gaming behavior are registered here, and on the other hand, self-banning offers an effective measure for self-protection.

For example, the players can specify the duration of the ban themselves. Everything is possible here, from 24-hour cooling down phases to month-long closures. If this block is activated, it cannot be reversed until the deadline expires.

Based on the figures and data from the DHS addiction report, it could be assumed that the legal gambling market in United Kingdom is experiencing growth, but that player protection is being taken seriously. However, only the next addiction report from the DHS will show whether reduced participation in gambling can actually reduce the risk of gambling addiction in the long term.
