80-year-old stole money in the high 6-figure range
In connection with gambling, various types of fraud occur again and again. Some time ago we reported on how a man stole a million-dollar jackpot with a fake ticket. Today's story, however, is about 80-year-old Mary Margaret Kreuper, who was sentenced to one year in prison last Monday. The nun had embezzled a whopping $835,000 from her employer simply because of her gambling addiction.
Ultimately, from a moral point of view, it should not have been an easy case for the judge himself, as the 80-year-old nun made an extensive confession. According to her own statements, she stole the money between 2007 and 2018. She took full advantage of her position as headmistress to enrich herself financially and satisfy her own gambling addiction. She left some of this money on her gambling trips in the casinos of the gambling capital of Las Vegas.

Kreuper did not want to deny her actions in court, but rather she faced her fate and helped solve her case herself. Before the trial began, she had already confessed to her crime, in which she violated all the rules and her own vow. In addition, she had already apologized in advance to everyone involvedigt for this major breach of trustigt. The nuns themselves are still conflicted, because while some accepted the apology and have already fully forgiven the 80-year-old, others still find it offensive. They would have liked a harsher sentence for the 80-year-old Kauper.
It wasn't an easy case for the judge in charge, Otis D. Wright, either, because according to his own statements, he had great concerns about the level of the sentence, which sometimes gave him sleepless nights. Aside from her crime, the 80-year-old achieved great things in her 62 years of service as a nun and was also considered a great teacher. Judge Wright himself had experienced in his youth the difference the work of nuns could make to people. As a result, the judge responsible decided to only serve one year in prison instead of the two years demanded by the public prosecutor. Furthermore, the 80-year-old nun is obliged to pay back the embezzled sum of just over USD 835,000. So far, Kauper has already repaid $10,000, but it is extremely unlikely that she will be able to pay off the entire amount in her remaining lifetime.
