1,500 games agreement
Apart from gambling advertising, hardly any other topic is currently discussed as extensively in the industry as the dangers of betting manipulation. In order to counteract fraudulent activities, the EHF (European Handball Federation) and the EHFM (European Handball Federation Marketing) have now expanded their agreements with the leading sports data service provider Sportradar. The company, based in St. Gallen (Switzerland), will act as the official data partner for both bodies until 2030.
The agreement includes the collection of live data and statistics for more than 1,500 national team and beach handball games. In addition, there are more than 750 European Cup games per season in all top European competitions. The latter include the men's and women's European Championships and their qualifying games, the youth sports events as well as the European Cup games of the World Cup qualification and the European Beach Handball Championships.
As far as EHF marketing is concerned, the contract covers all matches of the EHF Men's and Women's Champions League, the EHF European League and the EHF European Cup.
Sportradar will continue to collect all official EHF data and distribute it to various media and Betting provider with casino distribute. In addition to the internationally proven Fraud Detection System, a digital processing system to protect against online fraud, Sportradar will also use state-of-the-art AI systems to perfect data analysis and further improve data traffic in handball.
Integration of educational programs
Sportradar's collaboration with the EHF and EHF Marketing began in November 2017 and included a multi-layered agreement on data protection, marketing and digital services. In November 2018, Sportradar expanded its collaboration with the organization to provide training and monitoring services to ensure the integrity of EHF competitions.
A number of educational programs on the risks of match and betting manipulation have been introduced. The sessions train association staff on relevant policies regarding sports betting and illegal match-fixing. On top of that, the EHF can use Sportradar’s so-called “Integrity Services”. These are tailored audits that help implement integrity programs.
"We have a long-standing relationship with EHF and EHFM and we are pleased to have been able to further expand our partnership to secure a long-term data and distribution rights agreement. We will continue to work with the association to grow the sport through our extensive network of media and betting partners." - David Lampitt, Managing Director, Sportradar, Press release
New era in handball sports
The EHF organizers have welcomed the expansion of the partnership with Sportradar. Among those who spoke was Martin Hausleitner, Secretary General of the EHF, who emphasized that European handball is currently on the threshold of a new era, with the agreement with Sportradar playing a crucial role. The aim is to help the sport reach new heights and deepen live scouting data.
David Szlezak, Managing Director at EHFM, added that it is absolutely essential to offer high quality and accurate data from the EHF's club competitions. The expanded collaboration will complement top-level scouting; for example, the data collected in the new EHF European League will be at the EHF Champions League standard from the first rounds onwards. The potential of data can now be fully exploited.
Increase in betting manipulation?
As a result of the Corona crisis, many sports associations are expecting an increase in betting manipulation. Due to the different start dates for top sports leagues across Europe, criminal activities could concentrate on individual markets. The debate was fueled, among other things, by a report from the anti-corruption organization Transparency, which primarily referred to the market in Australia, where Bundesliga betting has started again since the end of May.
Sylvia Schenk, head of the sports working group at Transparency Australia, said that people all over the world were waiting to bet again. Security would probably fall by the wayside. In contrast, the lawyer Carsten Thiel von Herff argued that the betting volume would increase again, but not the number of manipulations.
In the Bundesliga, the number of players that fraudsters sought contact with did not increase in the run-up to the resumption. On the contrary, the risk of contact due to the quarantine measures is significantly lower. Transparency spokeswoman Schenk explained in return that insider knowledge brings a lot of money and can now be easily disclosed digitally or by telephone. The developments remain to be seen.
