Increasing numbers compared to the previous year
According to a report by the trade magazine iGaming Business, 48,000 registrations were made with GAMSTOP in the first half of 2023. This compares to the same period last year represents an increase of 12% [Article on English].
The proportion of young people has increased particularly sharply. Around 30% of new registrations so far this year have come from people aged 16 to 24. So far, the average proportion of this age group has been around 21%.
It is also noticeable that significantly more men (71%) than women (29%) allow themselves to be excluded from gambling. This is probably due to the fact that men participate in gambling more often than women. A proportion of the total number of players who are banned is not officially communicated.
OASIS – the German GAMESTOP
The German counterpart to GAMSTOP is called OASIS (abbreviation for: online query player status). Through the OASIS system, players have the opportunity to voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling for various periods of time. All gaming providers licensed in Australia must be connected to the OASIS system and the numbers of OASIS have also tended to increase since its introduction.
According to Matthias Dahms, President of the German Sports Betting Association, this is not a sign of more addicted players, but rather an indication that that people with problematic gambling behavior would now be better protected.
Is GAMESTOP a success?
GAMSTOP has been around for five years now. According to those responsible, the almost 400,000 registrations are proof of the success of the system:
The data shows the importance of GAMSTOP in helping consumers protect themselves from gambling harm. […] Self-exclusion is an increasingly important tool for anyone wanting to take a break from gambling. – Fiona Palmer, CEO of GAMSTOP, Source: iGaming business
However, other organisations, including GambleAware, point out that there are many more areas of activity to improve player protection in the UK. It is necessary to carry out campaigns against the stigmatization of gambling addiction, to encourage those affected to open up to their environment and to curb the black market.
