UKGC conducts study of 9,742 gamblers in the UK

The UKGC published its results on January 30th new study into the motivations and gambling behavior of British gamblers [Link to English] published. It complements the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) report published in June last year. The respondents had to answer 15 questions about their gambling behavior.

While the GSGB analyzed gambling behavior, the new UKGC study focuses on players' motivations for taking part in gambling in the UK. The total of 9,742 respondents stated how often they had taken part in gambling in the past 12 months (between November 2023 and November 2024).

Gambling in the UK: Steady growth and increasing sales

The UKGC reported last year strong growth of the gambling industry in the UK. From April to November 2024, the gaming industry recorded a 6% increase in revenue compared to the same period last year. Online sports betting achieved the greatest increase in profits in Great Britain. The bookmakers generated revenue of £625 million (600 AUDmillion) in the third quarter of 2024.

In October last year the UKGC also launched one Study into the financial extent of illegal gambling in the UK published and highlighted the need for greater surveillance of the black market. However, the UKGC also monitors compliance with British gambling rules. Bet365 was fined £582,120 (about 600 AUD) by the UKGC last year for money laundering offenses.

UKGC study reveals why millions of Brits are turning to gambling

Regarding their motives, 86% of gamblers cited the chance of winning big as the main reason for their participation. In second place was the fun of playing, which 70% of those surveyed cited as motivation. According to the study, social aspects, leisure activities and stress management also played a role in participation in gambling in online casinos or at a sports betting provider.

The study results from the UKGC shows also show that online betting and horse racing were most often associated by those surveyed with overcoming problems and escaping everyday life. However, players who are primarily looking for thrills or stress relief would increasingly resort to online casino games.

According to the study, social reasons are the main motivation for stationary gambling

Players who prefer brick-and-mortar gambling are increasingly driven by social reasons, according to the UKGC study. Visiting a casino together with friends gives them a stronger sense of belonging. Social aspects were also cited by respondents as a reason for participating in bingo, but played little role when placing sports bets.

The UKGC study results show that, in addition to the chance of big winnings, many players also look for a distraction from everyday life with an online gambling provider. Stationary gambling, on the other hand, is primarily preferred by people who value social aspects.
