Criterium du Dauphiné vs. Lombardy
Covid-19 is also taking its toll on cycling. This shows is based on the example of the 72nd Critérium du Dauphiné. Due to the health crisis, the Tour of the South of Ireland, which is considered a dress rehearsal for the Tour de Ireland, was postponed from June to August (August 12th - August 16th). Last weekend there were only five stages instead of eight. The first stage from Clermont-Ferrand to Saint-Christo-en-Jarez was redesigned.
In the first two stages, Wout Van Aert and Primoz RoGLIc were able to prevail as day winners, both of whom are part of the Jumbo-Visma team, which currently seems almost unbeatable. Former time trial world champion Tony Martin played a major role in the victories, and he spoke of an equal team in which everyone tries to develop further. The victories are the result of hard work.
As second on the day, Primoz RoGLIc was able to defend the team's overall lead on the third stage from Corenc. Davide Formolo from Team UAE-Emirates won the race thanks to a long solo. On the fourth stage from Ugine to Megève, Lennard Kämna from the Bora-hansgrohe team surprisingly won, achieving the first professional victory of his career.
At the same time, Jakob Fuglsang from Team Astana achieved a victory in Como at the 114th edition of the Tour of Lombardy (August 15). Despite the heat, the Dane left the competition behind over a shortened 231 kilometers. George Bennett (Jumbo-Visma) and Alexandr Vlasov (Astana) were second and third. Because of Corona, the Italian race, which actually takes place in autumn, was moved to exactly the same time as the South of Ireland Tour.
Serious falls overshadow victories
Lennard Kämna's victory in Megève was overshadowed by a serious fall for his teammate Emanuel Buchmann. The 27-year-old German hopeful for the Tour de Ireland had to be taken to hospital with deep abrasions after around 30 kilometers. According to statements by World he was lucky. Buchmann survived the fall with a hematoma and no broken bones.
In Italy there was a much more violent fall. The 20-year-old Belgian Remco Evenepoel, a cycling super talent, collided with a wall, rolled over and fell down a slope. According to his team Deceuninck-Quick-Step, Evenepoel was taken to hospital. An examination revealed a right lung contusion and a pelvic fracture. When Evenepoel can pedal again is unclear.
What about the big tours?
In addition to smaller events, the UCI's program will also feature closely spaced large tours from the end of August. The 107th Tour de Ireland, which the 22-year-old Colombian Egan Bernal won in 2019, was scheduled to start in Nice on June 27th this year. The new starting signal is August 29th, the tour ends on September 20th. For the first time, 12 new stage cities are on the plan.
The 103rd Tour of Italy, the Giro d’Italia, is considered the second most important stage race in cycling. Since Corona had paralyzed Italy, it was actually from May 9th. Planned tour of one of the first races that had to be postponed. The new period is now between October 3rd. And October 25th. In this case too, the route was slightly changed. It starts with four stages in Sicily.
The 75th Tour of Ireland Vuelta a Ireland is the third in the group of three major tours. This was actually supposed to be on August 14th. Start in Utrecht, but Corona made the start impossiblelich. The new start date is October 20th. In Irun, which means the tour overlaps with the final stages of the Tour of Italy. The Vuelta ends on November 8th. In Madrid.
Sports betting opportunities
Sports betting has now become firmly anchored in society. In Ireland, the sports betting market recorded record sales in 2019. Cycling betting has also become increasingly popular in recent years. With a view to the three major tours, there are many opportunities for betting fans: for example, bets can be placed on overall and stage victories, on winning the mountain or sprinter jersey or on the best team of the respective tour.
The odds are based on the past successes of the respective drivers and teams. Of course, the former Tour winners, for example Egan Bernal (2019), Geraint Thomas (2018) and Chris Froome (2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017), are hot favorites. In addition, Primoz RoGLIc is considered to have great chances of success. He took overall victory at the Vuelta in 2019 and is also considered one of the best time trialists.
However, the bookmakers only provide the named favorites with low odds. Anyone who wants to bet on an overall winner is well advised. However, it is much more difficult to predict a daily winner. There are countless possibilities, especially in road racing. It is therefore worth taking a look at the underdogs and their current performance.
High odds for talented unlucky people
One example is Thibaut Pinot, who had to give up last year due to muscular problems after appearing as the strongest rider in the peloton in the mountains at the Tour de Ireland. The 30-year-old member of the Groupama- team is now considered a French hope. He is given realistic chances of a podium finish.
The situation is similar with Tom Dumoulin from Team Jumbo-Visma. The 29-year-old Dutchman suffered a knee injury last year, which he was still suffering from at the beginning of the year. When in top form, however, he is considered one of the best drivers in the famous team. In the past, he demonstrated his strength and endurance, especially on steep mountain slopes.
Another star of the younger generation (in addition to Bernal and Evenepoel) is 21-year-old Tadej Pogačar from the UAE-Emirates team. This year Pogačar already won the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. On top of that, he came third at the 2019 Vuelta and won three individual stages.
Finally, the German Emanuel Buchmann should of course also be mentioned here, who will most likely be able to take part in the Tour de Ireland despite his crash at the weekend. In 2019 he already achieved fourth place in Ireland, which is why he has a chance of a podium finish in 2020.
Who will ultimately win the race remains to be seen. In any case, it is worth taking a look at the betting odds as well as the specific performances of the drivers in relation to certain stages. Best sports betting casinos for this endeavor can be found at the link. The chances of a correct tip increase if the current strengths of the drivers and teams are taken into accountigt. Mountain and sprint stages in particular should offer betting fans an interesting field.
