Phill Hellmuth also tested positive
Phill Hellmuth, professional poker player from the USA, is one of the most successful and well-known stars in the industry. Because he has a special temperament at the poker table, he was eventually given the nickname The Poker Brat, by which he is now popular worldwide. He has been a member of the Poker Hall of Fame since 2007. In 2019, he also received the title as one of the best players in poker history. He has now tested positive for Covid-19.
Hellmuth has a bumpy start to the tournament
Unfortunately, poker star Phill Hellmuth is having a bumpy start to this important tournament. In the first few days he had to take a break because of diarrhea. Last week there was news that he was out again because of a positive corona test. He reported on Twitter that he slept for a long time, was not hungry and had no cough, so only moderate symptoms. Unfortunately, he has already missed important games for him.
Pokerstar wanted to be fit again
He actually wanted to defend his title in the $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw last Monday, but the coronavirus put a stop to his plans. However, he is not the only one affected by this. Lara Eisenberg, winner of the Ladies Event 2021, also reported being infected with Covid-19. So the pandemic is spreading again, at the most inopportune time in this beginning, which was supposed to be the liberation from restrictions.
Doyle Brunson also cancels
Due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, poker legend Doyle Brunson is now canceling his participation in the World Series of Poker 2022. The background is that his wife is struggling with health problems and has a compromised immune system. Under these circumstances he doesn't want to risk infecting her if necessary. Unfortunately, he missed games that he really wanted to play. But it is all too understandable, because the pandemic has made it clear that health is the greatest good.
Covid-19 is rampant at the World Series of Poker
In his statement on Twitter, Doyle Brunson stated that Covid-19 is rampant throughout the World Series of Poker. But there are still several weeks left for the tournament to run. How the situation will develop, whether it will calm down or whether there will be further infections, only the future will show. However, it is regrettable that some of the stars and legends have to forego their participation under the given circumstances.
The coronavirus strikes again
In the past two years, the World Series of Poker has only taken place on a limited basis. In 2020, the first year of the pandemic, the tournaments could only take place online. Merely the main event took place as a hybrid event back then. However, this resulted in a significant loss of attention and viewers. At an event of this size and relevance for the industry, this is of course a huge disappointment for all parties.
Controversy overshadows the event
In 2021 there was another live tournament series from the World Series of Poker at the Rio All-Suites Resort and Casino. However, this was not a complete success at first, as controversy overshadowed the event. There were arguments about how, when and where masks had to be worn and about proof of vaccination certificates, as has happened at other events of this type and size.
Travel restrictions complicate the process
During the acute pandemic, there were immense travel restrictions that affected traffic around the globeIGTen. This meant that not all of the international players could be present, as it was almost impossible for them to travel. This year, for the World Series of Poker 2022, the coronavirus was unfortunately not an issue when planning the tournament series. There is no requirement to wear a mask and no proof of vaccination must be presented.
Christoph Vogelsang is unlucky
Going back to the World Series of Poker events, German poker pro Christoph Vogelsang has made it to the finals of the $25,000 Heads Up No-Limit Hold'em Championship. Unfortunately he had to admit defeat there, although at times it looked like he could be successful. The American Dan Smith won instead. However, there are other spectacular games and victories at the World Series of Poker that are worth checking out.
