AI agents work together and cheat at blackjack

At the beginning of the week, a report from England made headlines in the gambling industry. Researchers at Oxford University conducted an experiment for a study.

They had AI agents playing blackjack in a lab. They instructed the agents to count the cards - this is actually forbidden in blackjack. The game started and the AI agents not only counted cards, but even coordinated without being noticed.

To do this, they spontaneously developed a secret language and used it to send each other information. This signaled to the other agents what value the next card was and how much money they should bet. They knew their conversations were being monitored and wanted to escape using secret language.

Particularly shocking: The researchers had a system running that was supposed to detect secret agreements. In the test it did not recognize the secret language.

The lessons learned could also have real-world implications. According to researchers, AI agents are already capable of committing fraud in e-commerce and finance. Their approach is very difficult to recognize and fraud is currently difficult to prevent.

Christian Schroeder de Witt, the head of the study, has a clear assessment. He considers a single AI agent to be harmless. But when they come together in a group, they work together unnoticed and can cause damage.

This recently happenedigt, when the platform Hugging Face was hacked by multiple AI agents. Various OpenAI models have exploited vulnerabilities and thereby gained access to the platform's infrastructure. The AI agents carried out several attack steps in succession.

Let's go back to blackjack. The Oxford University experiment impressively showedigt how easy it is for AI agents to cheat when gambling. This could have a major impact on the gambling industry in the future. Online providers in particular must prepare themselves for these dangers.

Action day against gambling addiction: Criticism of the illegal market

September 30, 2026 was the day of action against gambling addiction. This year's motto was: addictive gambling - massive advertising, little protection! Many authorities and ministries came forward around this day and published statements.

This includes Hendrik Streeck, Federal Government Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues and patron of the day of action. He was particularly reminiscent of the consequences of gambling addiction. He mentioned debt, job loss, broken relationships and families and even suicide as possible consequences.

In this context, he called for stronger prevention and more help for those affected. Streeck also brought the action against illegal gambling into focus:

"Gambling addiction can destroy livelihoods. People lose their savings, their jobs, their relationships and, in the worst case, their lives. And the consequences not only affect those affected, but also partners, children, parents and friends. What is particularly problematic is that illegal providers earn considerable sums from this business, while the protective mechanisms of the regulated market do not work there." - Hendrik Streeck, Federal Government Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues, Federal Drug Commissioner

The German Automatenwirtschaft e.V. Has also reported on the day of action against gambling addiction. There is a large message right on the home page of the association's website. It says that DAW does not want to make money from addicts and therefore expressly welcomes the OASIS blocking system. It offers the greatest possible consumer protection.

At the same time, the DAW also denounced the black market. Since people play there without limits, youth and consumer protection, without a blocking system and without trained staff, the DAW sees a great danger in the illegal gambling market. She therefore advocates strengthening the legal market.

The Joint Gaming Authority of the States (GGL) has also joined forces reported on the day of the action and published a statement on gambling advertising. At the same time were also FAQs on the topic posted online.

The GGL makes it clear that gambling advertising is permitted within a legally defined framework. This includes, among other things, that gambling advertising is largely prohibited between 6 a.m. And 9 p.m. This applies to virtual slot games, online poker and online casino games. Sports betting advertising is also subject to precise requirements.

UEFA Nations League: First win for Klopp & resignation from CR7

The UEFA Nations League also caused a stir this week. The game between Ireland and Serbia took place on Thursday evening. Ireland won 2-0 thanks to goals from Tom Bischof and Florian Wirtz.

The German team made a good impression and competed with the second squad named by Klopp. Mika Baur, among others, made his debut for the national team. The game between Greece and the Netherlands also ran at the same time and ended 2-2. This puts Ireland in third place in the group, just one point behind the Netherlands.

Cristiano Ronaldo also made headlines around the Nations League.
