Online casinos dominate the market
As part of the Danish gambling market statistics [link to English], the Danish gambling authority has published a comprehensive report. The authority determined that Danish players spent a total of DKK 587 million (approx. EUR 78.68 million) on gambling in November 2024. Compared to November 2023, this represents growth of 18.3%.
The Danish Gambling Authority also examined where the most gross gaming revenue was recorded:
- Online Casinos: 45.86%
- Sports betting: 31.54%
- Slots: 17.27%
- Brick-and-mortar casinos: 5.33%
Online casinos are the most profitable form of gambling in Denmark. Gross gaming revenue totaled DKK 278 million (approx. EUR 37.26 million) in November 2024, representing growth of 19% compared to the previous year.
Slots are the most popular
A large part of the income from online casinos can be attributed to slots at 76.31%. Roulette and Blackjack followed with 6.81 and 6.55% respectively. Bingo has a share of 3.37% of the total gross gaming revenue of online casinos.
According to the Danish study, the most popular day for online casinos is Friday. Overall, the statistics are very mixed and there is no day that particularly stands out.
Gambling among young people confirmsigt once again
The Danish Gaming Authority will already have a study on the topic in November 2024 Online gambling among minors published. This showed that gambling is widespread among Danish young people. The current figures from November 2024 would confirm these findings.
The authority worked with the StopSpillet initiative to achieve this. 50.1% of all players seeking organization help started gambling between the ages of 0-17. In Denmark, participation in online gambling is only legal from the age of 18. 37.4% took part in gambling for the first time between the ages of 18 and 25.
One further study showed that 15% of all young people between the ages of 15 and 17 have already come into contact with gambling. The current data suggests that gambling among young people is a significant problem in Denmark.
Sports betting sees 33% growth
The Danish study also contains figures relating to the sports betting sector. This grew by 33% and recorded 178 DKK (approx. EUR 23.86 million) in gross gaming revenue in February of this year.
The gaming authority examined which devices Danish players would use to place their sports bets:
- Mobile devices: 62.05%
- Stationary betting offices: 23.75%
- Computers: 14.21%
Most sports bets would be placed on Saturdays. Sundays and Fridays follow. Data from the Danish Gambling Authority shows that sports bets are placed significantly less during the week. The fact that many major sporting events take place on weekends could be a possible explanation.
Figures about the self-exclusion register
The Danish gaming authority not only examined the returns from gambling, but also focused on the self-exclusion register ROFUS [Link to English]. It gives players the opportunity to sign up to the register and take a break from gambling.
In November 2024, 48,685 people were entered in the register. ROFUS has set a new record: so many people have never been entered in the register. It is striking that 77.24% of all those registered are men and 22.76% are women.
64.98% of the registered people are permanent entries, while the rest are only registered for a certain period of time. 16.87% of registered people were banned for six months. For 11.97% it is three months and for 6.18% it is one month.
