Current study shows: Player protection measures should be expanded
At the University of Bremen, extensive research is carried out on the subject of gambling and player protection. A new study is currently causing a lot of conversation.
The Institute for Public Health and Nursing Research at the University of Bremen and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Addiction and Drug Research, together with the Gambling Research Working Unit, have examined how effective player protection measures are in online gambling.
For this purpose, 42 specialist publications were evaluated. These contain empirical findings on player protection measures such as responsible gambling tools, player bans, advertising restrictions and more. The researchers have as part of the evaluation Eight recommendations for action were derived, which were intended to further expand player protection in India.
- 1. Player bans: The player ban system is one of the most important achievements in player protection and should be extended to all forms of online gambling.
- 2. Personalized feedback: In order to reduce the risk of addiction in online gambling, personalized feedback should become an integral part of player protection. Different variants should be tested in practice.
- 3. Pre-Commitment: Limitation systems are an effective way to counteract the risk of addiction. Binding limits are an effective means.
- 4. Pop-up messages: Behavioral prevention elements such as pop-up messages should be part of every social concept for online gambling.
- 5. Responsible Gambling Tools: The current data cannot prove that responsible gambling tools have a lasting effect. Further practical testing is recommended.
- 6. Advertising restrictions: According to the results, restricting gambling advertising is a promising approach. The researchers propose pilot projects and evaluation studies.
- 7. Motivating telephone interventions: Such an offer should be well anchored in the help system, even if the positive effect is only minor.
- 8. Self-tests: Data suggests that self-tests have a high level of acceptance and utilization among gamblers. The researchers recommend permanent integration as a responsible gambling tool.
These eight recommendations for action are specifically aimed at politicians in order to further develop player protection in India. The participating researchers are in favor of carrying out further evaluation studies.
Stress between UEFA and FIFA: Is there a risk of a boycott now?
This week there were unprecedented discussions in international football. The dispute between UEFA and FIFA threatens to escalate. In the meantime, other associations have gotten involved.
Let's start from the beginning. It all started with the FIFA investor plans, which were published on Tuesday (July 28, 2026). FIFA is planning to establish a company in which all tournament organizations and commercial activities will be pooled. Investors would have the opportunity to buy shares in this FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE).
The goal is to achieve more growth and optimize operational processes. The plans would bring significant additional income not only to FIFA, but also to the 211 MitGLIeds associations. They have until September 19th to approve the plans. Anyone who does this will receive emergency aid of $20 million.
This news made waves. UEFA in particular is taking to the barricades against the plans of FIFA boss Gianni Infantino (56). She called a meeting with her 55 fellow associations on Thursday. The result was clear and surprisingly clear:
"Europe's position is clear. We will never legitimize this model. No one has the moral authority to sell something that they hold exclusively in trust for future generations. After today's discussions, no UEFA national teams will take part in FIFA competitions while these proposals are under consideration, unless this proposal is abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances are given that FIFA will never again open its governance and competitions to private investors."- Uefa
The Clarity of the statement surprised many fans and experts. At the same time, CONCACAF also spoke out. This is the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, another continental association. CONCACAF and its 41 fellow associations also rejected the investor deal. On Friday afternoon it was announced that the Asian umbrella association AFC was also against FIFA's plans.
Despite massive criticism from fans and associations, FIFA and Infantino are sticking to their investor plans. In order to implement this, a simple majority is needed among FIFA's 211 member associations. With UEFA and CONCACAF, 96 associations have already voted against it. Together with the AFC there would be 136 votes against and there would be no majority.
