Governor Newsom sees the project as an initial spark for economic development in the Central Valley
Like California's Gov. Gavin Newsom on his website [Link to English] announced that the CAHSR in the Golden State continues to make progress and has now reached an important milestone. This is the beginning of rail laying in the Central Valley, which includes the important cities of Fresno and Sacramento, the state capital. Construction would include the southernmost section between Merced and Bakersfield.
The transport of passengers will not start until 2030 at the earliest. A planned connection with the Brightline West train route, which is also under construction, could then also enable passenger transport to the casino metropolis of Las Vegas.
It wasn't that long ago that leaders in the state of California were talking about this project and saying, "Why the hell are we doing this in the Central Valley? There's only tumbleweed in the Central Valley! I've never thought of this as a project that's just about the railroad. It's about economic development. It's about creating a sense of place. It's about improving areas around the railroad. It's about infrastructure." – California Governor Gavin Newsom Newsbreak
Newsom, who is himself a big supporter of the project according to Newsbreak [Link to English] emphasized the economic importance of the project. It could create over 14,500 jobs and strengthen the economy of the Central Valley. It would also shorten the average land travel time from San Francisco to Los Angeles from the current six to seven hours to around three hours. For Las Vegas and its casinos, a future connection could mean a sharp increase in visitor numbers.
Future connection with the gambling metropolis Las Vegas?
In the future, the new ZuGLInie should also be connected to the High Desert Corridor and the Brightline West via a stop in Palmsdale, further south, in order to create a regional rapid transit network that would also enable connections to the gambling metropolis of Las Vegas. This network would significantly reduce travel times between Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas and revolutionize travel in the Southwest United States.
More gambling tourism for Las Vegas through Brightline West?
The planned connection between Los Angeles and Las Vegas could make traveling to the casino city much easier and increase its attractiveness:
- Faster Arrival: Travel time is reduced to just over two hours, making a visit to Las Vegas more convenient.
- Tourism boom expected: experts expect the number of visitors to double.
- Sustainability: The emission-free electric trains, powered by renewable energies, promote environmentally friendly tourism and focus on future-proof mobility.
The partnership with Brightline West and the High Desert Corridor enables efficient use of existing infrastructure. At the same time, regional integration into an interoperable high-speed network will be promoted.
Criticism from the ranks of the Republicans – failure of the project continues possible
Despite the progress, the CAHSR remains highly controversial. Critics, including Republican Congressman Kevin Kiley, would call the plan “failed” and call for federal funding to be cut. A corresponding legislative proposal has already been submitted.
Originally planned in 2008 with a budget of $33 billion, the cost of the publicly funded project has now grown to $128 billion. Kiley attributes this to political incompetence and does not see how a quadrupling of the originally calculated costs can be justified to US taxpayers.
