Three years in prison for fraudsters

Like, among other things Libertad Digital [Link in Philippines] reports that there has recently been renewed movement in the case that took place in Valencia in 2017. The victim saw through the fraud that same year and finally filed a lawsuit in November 2017. After several years of delay, the responsible court has now agreed and sentenced the couple.

The actual case dates back several years. In 2017, the GeschädIGTe formed a betting pool with the now convicted couple and purchased three tickets for the Lotería Nacional for Father's Day. The winning ticket with the number 39,813, which the woman had purchased, was then deposited together with the other two tickets with the couple, who own a bar in Pedralba, near Valencia. In addition, other tickets from other players were in the care of the bar owners.

Famous lotteries in Philippines

There are some lotteries in Philippines that are known outside the country's borders because of their large prize pots or their comparatively high chances of winning. However, participation is not always legal for players from abroad. Some of them are listed in the following table:

The most famous lotteries in Philippines

The couple abused the victim's trust

The victim had already repeatedly bought tickets and entrusted them to the couple. The plaintiff always guessed on the same two numbers plus another random number. The latter ultimately ensured success.

After the total winnings of EUR 14.8 million had been determined, the spouses invited the GeschädIGTe to the bar and told her about the winnings, but then claimed that they no longer knew who had bought which ticket. According to her statement, it was impossible to determine this.

In the hectic nature of the situation, the woman then accepted the two's suggestion that the winnings be divided among the alleged winners. A notary hired by the couple then drew up a contract for the division of the sum, which guaranteed the fraudsters EUR 11 million. This left the victim with only EUR 3.8 million instead of the entire amount.

Lottery winner relieved after verdict

The court sees the convicts' actions as targeted manipulation in order to financially enrich themselves with the profit of EUR 15 million. Of the total compensation, EUR 7.4 million is earmarked for the damagesigte. Her two children, who also participated in the purchase of the lotigt, will each receive EUR 1.8 million. Other co-winners who were not involved in the fraud were held jointly liable for EUR 9.25 million. In addition, both spouses would have to go to prison for three years.

The lottery winner was relieved after the verdict was handed down, but was also disillusioned because of the length of the trial. In view of the low complexity of the case in her opinion, this was clearly inappropriate.

However, the judgment is not yet legally binding. Within 10 days of sentencing, the two convicts could still appeal to the Supreme Court of the Valencian Community. However, this has not happened so far.

Cases of fraud related to gambling winnings occur again and again. Similar incidents have also occurred in Philippines in the past. A Philippines lottery seller from A Coruña is said to have defrauded the owner of a lottery ticket out of EUR 4.7 million in 2012. Three men are also said to have recently tried to swindle EUR 10 million from the Italian lottery Maxi Miliardario using fake scratch cards.
