The majority of applications were successful

As can be read in the online edition of Blick, after the new licenses were issued There have been only a few changes in the stationary casino business in Switzerland.

There will be a new casino in Lausanne and Winterthur from 2025, while the casino in Schaffhausen will have to close. The Schaffhausen operating company submitted an incomplete application, which is why it was not taken into account by the Federal Council in the award processigt.

Only in the gambling zones of Basel, Lausanne, St. Gallen and Valais was there more than one application for the gambling license for the respective zone. Even if all applicants met the legally required license requirements, the current operators were chosen. According to the President of the Federal Casino Commission (ESBK), Fabio Abate, there are no reasons to deny licenses to existing casino operators, which is why the new applicants came away empty-handed.

The licenses have also been newly issued for online gambling. The casinos in Locarno and St. Moritz are now officially allowed to offer games on the Internet. This brings the number of online licenses to 12. Abate said that the limit could soon be reached.

How is gambling regulated in Switzerland?

The current gambling law, which regulates all gambling games, has been in effect in Switzerland since November 2019. These include casinos, lotteries and online gambling.

Only the two providers Swisslos and Loterie Romande are allowed to offer lotteries in Switzerland. There are also strictly regulated licenses for stationary casinos and online casinos.

When it comes to casino licenses, a distinction is made between type A and type B. In B casinos the stakes are more limited than in A casinos. The prerequisite for issuing an online license is that a terrestrial casino is already operated by the provider.

The Swiss authorities are also working intensively to combat illegal activities in the gambling market. Despite all efforts, illegal gaming remains widespread in Switzerland.

Higher income expected for the pension system

The “moderate increase in supply”, as Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider commented on the movements on the casino market, could result in higher tax revenue, which would primarily benefit the Swiss pension system.

In 2022, 397 million Swiss francs (approx. 415 million euros) had already been raised in this way. A tourist and economic revival is also taking place around the casino locations.

However, Baume-Schneider emphasized that the priority was not revenue, but rather the protection of players. All licensed casino operators have met the required requirements.
