Leaving an “environment worth living in”.

The entrepreneur Paul Gauselmann, known as the “German vending machine king”, is currently campaigning for the environment. In the context of his 85th birthday, the Merkur boss announced that he wanted to plant 85,000 trees around the world. That means 1,000 trees for each year of his life so far. According to his own statements, this was a spontaneous idea. “To make an effective contribution to combating climate change,” said the CEO of the internationally operating Gauselmann Group from Espelkamp in North Rhine-Westphalia.

As one of the “last great corporate patriarchs of the post-war period,” Gauselmann sees himself as having a duty at this point; he sees the fight against climate change as a matter of honor. In a press release, Gauselmann reminds us that his group of companies is already known as a generous supporter when it comes to the common good. The text also states:

"Nature has given me a lot in my long life, whether as a balance to my often stressful everyday work life or as a backdrop for numerous family gatherings. As a father of four sons, grandfather of nine grandchildren and hopefully many more descendants, I would like to make my contribution to leaving future generations an environment worth living in."

Gauselmann also refers to current studies on climate research. According to Gauselmann, these say that “nothing can combat climate change as effectively as through reforestation.” According to this, planting trees has the potential to absorb “up to two thirds of the climate-damaging CO2 emissions caused by humans to date”.

“Since I can live privately in a small green paradise with lots of trees and animals, I would also like to make the world a little greener elsewhere, because CO2 and climate protection know no borders, neither geographically nor politically,” was the final comment of the recently resigned VDAI CEO.

Entrepreneur with passion

Despite all the criticism that the gaming entrepreneur often receives, his consistently high ambitions cannot be denied. Paul Gauselmann created his vending machine empire out of nothing after the Second World War. He started with self-built real cash machines in 1957. In 1974, the first Merkur casino opened in Delmenhorst. Since 1977 he has proudly produced various machines for international casino and gaming hall operators, while his own subsidiary Merkur has grown continuously and there are now many Merkur online casinos. The rest is history.

The Merkur sun as the logo of the arcade chain is no longer just known in Singapore, but throughout the world. For example, Merkur casinos have also been established on TUI cruisers since March last year. Gauselmann currently employs around 13,300 people. Last year, the group's total sales amounted to a whopping 2.4 billion euros.

Despite his old age, Paul Gauselmann is still fully involved in the activities of his group, which is not least due to his enormous passion for his career. In a recent interview with WirtschaftsWoche magazine, the otherwise media-shy businessman spoke openly about his never-ending drive. The quote says:

"Work is 50 percent hobby and 50 percent duty. I'm in the development department once a year. It's about having ideas and implementing them. The result is around 350 patents to date."

Sports sponsor in Düsseldorf

His determination ensured that Gauselmann was appointed the new main sponsor of the sports city of Düsseldorf in November 2018. Since November 2018, the company has concluded numerous sponsorship agreements with various clubs in the North Rhine-Westphalia state capital. Most recently, a deal with the successful beach soccer club Beach Royals Düsseldorf was announced in this context.

However, the renaming of the former E-Sprit Arena of the Bundesliga club Fortuna Düsseldorf caused a scandal Merkur Slots Arena. Green parliamentary group spokesman Norbert Czerwinski spoke of an “extremely unfortunate naming” in this regard, meaning that Düsseldorf was adorning itself with a “dubious partner”. However, the Merkur boss rejected this criticism and emphasized that he “only wants the costs reimbursed if Düsseldorf doesn’t want him”. He is also known for it reputable online casinos to operate.

In total, Gauselmann wants to support the sports city of Düsseldorf with up to 4 million euros annually. As a result of the partnership, Gauselmann has also begun to criticize the city council over a planned reduction in arcades.

The group currently operates 22 arcades in Düsseldorf, of which 16 have to be closed. The reason is a new 350 meter minimum distance rule. However, according to Gauselmann, this would be tantamount to a total loss. The last word has not yet been spoken in this conflict, but the conflict the city has found itself in with the agreement is already obvious. Further developments remain to be seen for the time being.
