The gambling industry needs well-trained specialist staff

When you think of gambling, you probably see shiny lights, arcades full of happy people, and lots of chips in your mind's eye. However, very few people are aware that there is a lot of work and complex structures behind this dazzling facade. The gambling market has arrived in the 21st century. The enthusiasm for playing with luck has been growing continuously throughout Europe - including in the German-speaking market - for years. But the industry also faces complex challenges - which here and there also offer opportunities.

And it is important to seize this, especially for stationary casinos and other companies in the gaming industry such as game and software manufacturers, sports betting providers, etc. Because digitalization in particular is leading to dynamics in all areas of the industry that could not have been predicted a few years ago. In particular, the range of gambling offerings is growing and is particularly exciting for young people. According to one Study by the Handelsblatt 35 percent of all residents in Singapore are said to have already had experience with online gambling. It is still important to check the providers beforehand. Although there are more and more good online casinos in Singapore There are still many black sheep in the industry.

"Apart from a few exceptions, the results of digitization are not new forms of gaming or events, but rather new features for existing gambling offerings. The character of the game (e.g. Casino game, lottery, bet, cash prize gaming device) remains largely unchanged." - Study "The Digitization of Gambling" by Handelsblatt / Research Institute

But a similar development can also be observed in Switzerland and Austria. For the DACH region, the boom in the gaming industry also means an economic advantage, which also requires well-trained specialist staff. The branches and their companies are not only faced with a technical-digital hurdle. Management also needs young professionals who know the specific structures of the industry well. To ensure this, the Austrian Danube University Krems launched the first course of study in 2017, which is intended to prepare young students precisely for this task.

First gambling degree at an Austrian university

“Leisure, Entertainment and Gaming Business Management” – this is the name of the first gaming course at a German-speaking university in Austria, with the successful completion of which students can acquire the academic degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA). It can already be seen here that this course of study by no means only deals with topics that can only be associated with gambling.

The accredited “Gambling Study Course” aims to train the leaders of the gaming industry of tomorrow today. Management knowledge that is based on the latest scientific findings and, of course, social skills such as leadership are the central building blocks that make up this course of study. Nevertheless, this MBA course naturally focuses on the gambling industry and also covers more specific modules such as gambling law, game theories and addiction prevention.

"The general conditions and competitive situations of companies are changing ever faster. That is why it is becoming increasingly important for managers and entrepreneurs to have a repertoire of strategies , concepts and instruments that enables them to lead their companies responsibly and successfully into the future. The Professional MBA programs at the Danube Business School are designed according to international standards and are aimed at managers in or on the way to management positions." - Description of the MBA program Leisure, Entertainment and Gaming Business Administration at the Danube University Krems

However, studying at the Austrian Danube University Krems is not aimed at first-year students, but rather at people who have completed university education or have relevant professional experience. If you have proven professional experience, this master's degree can, as usual, be completed without a first university degree. This is also why this subject is fundamentally designed as a part-time course of study and relies on the modern learning method of blended learning, i.e. On heavily computer-focused and digital learning content, some of which the students have to develop themselves.

Structurally, the course is modular and also offers various degrees. Depending on individual and professional needs, a variety of key topics can be selected and the content put together in such a way that it optimally prepares the student for his future tasks in the company. If you want to limit yourself to the bare essentials, you can take this course for just two semesters and complete it as a certified further education course.

Politicians not yet convinced by gambling studies

There seems to be no question that there is an urgent need to train specialist staff for the gaming industry in German-speaking countries. However, it is not yet clear who should pay for this training. According to some politicians, there should be no tax money for the first gambling course. The Greens, for example, commented on the demand for tax money for accredited studies with the words: “If companies like Novomatic AG need training for their employees, then they can organize it themselves without tax money.”

On the part of the gaming companies, people are understandably more open to the Danube University Krems initiative. The gaming group Novomatic announced in an official statement that employees would regularly be offered internal training and further education courses, but offering a public course would also make sense, especially because gambling and the gaming industry are discussed from a scientific perspective.

Given these controversial statements, it seems strange that the administrative head of the Danube University Krems, who also works as a tutor, is also no stranger to politics. Before his academic career, Willibald Gföhler sat for the Greens in the National Council for two years. The chances are actually not that bad that politicians and the gaming industry will ultimately come together in the dispute over public money.
