2018: Serious allegations of sexual harassment
The Wall Street Journal [Link to English] published a comprehensive article in November 2018 that made various allegations against Steve Wynn public. It was stated that he is said to have forced countless employees to perform sexual actsigt. The journalists spoke to dozens of women who are said to have reported various incidents.
A large portion of the harassment allegations against Steve Wynn came from employees at the spa at Wynn Las Vegas. In this context, the Wall Street Journal also discovered that Wynn is said to have paid a former employee $7.5 million out of court.
Casino mogul, billionaire and politician
Steve Wynn was born in Connecticut in 1942. In the 1960s he was co-owner of a casino - the starting point for his future career. He gradually began to open more casinos and within a few years established himself as an influential casino operator.
For example, he ran the Golden Nugget Las Vegas and The Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip. He opened the Bellagio in the late 1990s before completing the Wynn Macau in 2006. The Wynn Las Vegas is also particularly well-known: at the time it opened, it was the most expensive hotel in the world. For many decades, Steve Wynn was one of the most influential men in the casino world and was even among the 500 richest people in the world.
Quick consequences – further investigations and resignation from his political office
The allegations against Steve Wynn were taken very seriously by the public and consequences followed quickly. Since 2017 he has been the finance chief of the Republican party executive committee. Donald Trump, with whom he is said to have been good friends, had appointed him to this office just a year earlier. One day after the article appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Wynn resigned from his position.
In the days that followed, further consequences became clear: the board of directors of the Nevada gaming authority announced an investigation. The University of Pennsylvania stripped him of his honorary degree.
He resigned as CEO of Wynn Resorts on February 6, 2018. In the following months, further allegations were made against him: he was accused of insider tradingigt, was said to have harassed other womenigt and even worked as a lobbyist for the Chinese government.
All of this led to the Nevada Gaming Control Board revoking his gambling license. He is a person with insufficient integrity.
The allegations not only affected Wynn itself: Wynn Resorts had to pay a fine of 20 million US dollars after its exit: the company's management knew about the sexual harassment and deliberately covered it up.
To this day, Wynn denies all allegations
After the allegations against him became loud, Steve Wynn commented on them several times. He denied all allegations against him and described them as untrue. He told the Wall Street Journal:
"The idea that I have ever attacked a woman is absurd. We live in a world where people can make allegations regardless of the veracity and a person is faced with the choice of either enduring offensive publicity or engaging in a multi-year legal battle. It is unfortunate that anyone should find themselves in this situation." - Steve Wynn, casino operator, Wall Street Journal
In recent years he has sued various journalists and magazines for defamation. This led to many of the women who accused him of sexual abuseigt using pseudonyms to protect themselves. Various lawsuits had to be dismissed because without the identity of the plaintiffs there could be no legally valid proceedings.
In November 2023, Wynn agreed to pay a $10 million fine and be barred from the Nevada gambling market. This ended a four-year legal battle with the state of Nevada.
Today Wynn is said to live in Florida. His lawyers say he is looking forward to a new phase of his life.
