Gambling streams lose a large proportion of viewers
Twitch explained in one Statement on Twitter that viewership of gambling streams has fallen by 75%. In November 2022, the platform updated its guidelines: Since then, streams of slots, roulette and dice games on Twitch have been prohibited if the operators are not licensed in the USA or cannot provide proof of player protection.
After the policy update - banning streams from certain websites that feature slot machines , roulette or dice games - we saw a decline in gambling viewership of approximately 75%. This means the change will have an immediate impact and our community will be better protected from scams and related harm. – Twitch, Twitch Support, Twitter
This now has a significant impact on the number of viewers of gambling streams. Twitch sees this as a positive aspect: the change in guidelines would protect the platform's users from scams and therefore make them safer.
Numerous new regulations for gambling streams on Twitch
The first allegations of scamming on Twitch are said to have occurred in November 2022: a streamer is said to have deliberately driven his viewers into a gambling addiction and thus enriched himself by thousands of dollars. As a result, numerous well-known streamers boycotted the platform.
Twitch had to act and introduced new gambling rules: Since then, streams of slots, roulette and dice games have been prohibited. A short time later, the ban was implemented, which also included well-known sites such as Stake, Rollbit and Duelbits.
Stake, for example, is a crypto casino and sports betting platform. Rollbit offers, among other things, NFT gambling, while Duelbits offers crypto sports betting.
Twitch continues to tighten its bans
Twitch continued to state on Twitter that player protection is its top priority. The platform therefore wants to introduce the necessary measures and, if necessary, block further pages.
This has now happened: Twitch has informed its community that Blaze and Gamdom are now also blocked on the platform. The aim is to implement the new guidelines and make Twitch safer. Further new rules are also due to come into force in November 2023.
On the same day, the platform announced that advertising for CS:GO gambling was now banned. These are raffles for in-game items for the game Counter Strike: Global Offensive. This ban is even spelled out literally in the Twitch Community Guidelines mentioned.
Twitch viewers are moving to other platforms
While Twitch continues to restrict its gambling streams, there are several platforms that are taking a different approach. Kick and Rumble, for example, are two platforms that specifically want to differentiate themselves from Twitch. Gambling streams and other content that Twitch has banned are still available there.
As Twitch explained on Twitter, violations of the new guidelines will continue to be punished in the future. It remains to be seen how the community will take this.
