Who will win the title of WSOP Player of the Year?
When the poker elite gathers in Las Vegas from May 27th to July 16th, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2025 the most important live tournament in the world. Bracelets and millions are played in over 100 live events and 30 online tournaments. The title of WSOP Player of the Year is also at stake. The following five players are among the most promising candidates in the run-up to the poker festival.
Daniel Negreanu (Canada)
Daniel Kid Poker Negreanu has been one of the most well-known names in poker for many years. In 2024, he broke an 11-year WSOP losing streak and won the $50,000 Poker Players Championship event. With seven bracelets, over 23 million USD (around 21.1 million EUR) in WSOP winnings and a tight tournament schedule for 2025, he is once again one of the favorites for the Player of the Year title, despite rather meager successes in recent years.

German translation: Daniel is really very good now, probably the best among the old school professionals. He fell behind in the late 2010s, but since the Doug Polk Challenge he has become very familiar with solvers and has a team of coaches to help him. Man has a really good understanding of GTO, plus years of live experience. I would bet on him in most areas.
Kristen Foxen (Canada)
The Canadian is currently the most successful woman in the field with five bracelets, three of which are online. After finishing 13th in the 2024 Main Event and several top finishes in 2025, she is considered one of the strongest players at this WSOP, even if she divides opinion online.
What Reddit says about her:
Kristen Foxen isn't as good as people say by u/Alive_Froyo_4001 in poker
English Translation: It seems that despite the high praise she received from the poker community, she has significantly underperformed across the high roller circuit. She plays pretty much all the major no-limit hold'em high rollers, but only has 9 million [USD] in cashes while failing at all the major tournaments. She played the Triton Monte Carlo, regularly plays the biggest WSOP events and other 25k+ buy-ins, but only had 1.7 million [USD] cashes last year and 1.2 [million USD] the year before that. It seems like she loses millions every year. What do you think?

German translation: She is a professional and does this for a living and has been doing so for a long time. Tournament results are variable anyway, but I know she was once a cash game grinder.
Stephen Chidwick (UK)
The British pro is one of the most consistent high roller players in the world. His second place in the Hendon Mob All Time Money List [Link to English] with almost 66 million USD (around 58 million EUR) in live prize money is no coincidence. Chidwick is both technically brilliant and psychologically stableigt. His analytical style of play makes him a dangerous opponent, especially in long tournament series like the WSOP.

English translation: Stephen Chidwick MUST have a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to live reads. I watched him with this Triton 1M. He only lets his opponent out of his sight when he collects chips for betting.

German translation: Chidwick is a damn magician, no doubt about it!! I guarantee that in 30 years when he has a long white beard, this will all be obvious.
Scott Seiver (USA)
The reigning 2024 WSOP Player of the Year comes to the Mojave Desert with the wind at his back: three bracelets in the last year alone, six since 2018. Seiver is known for his versatility and mental strength, which makes him once again a serious contender for multiple titles at the 2025 WSOP.
What Reddit says about him:
Comment by u/CompetitiveRadio2222 from discussion in poker
German translation: Has been there forever, obviously a winner. Has the unfortunate predisposition of looking 50 at 35. A personal trainer wouldn't hurt either.
Comment by u/redscorts from discussion in poker
German translation: Seiver really proves that he is one of the best of all time. Kind of cool that all 3 of his [2024] bracelets were won in non-Hold'em events.
Phil Hellmuth (USA)
With 17 WSOP bracelets, Phil Hellmuth is the undisputed most successful player in series history. The Poker Brat is known for his emotional outbursts as well as his extraordinary ability to win tournaments. Even if he wants to forego the main event in 2025, he remains extremely dangerous in selected formats, especially in no-limit hold'em variants with great media attention.
What Reddit says about him:
Comment by u/itsaride from discussion in poker
German translation: I bet he'll play at some point! He has simply reached senior age and wants all tournaments to be senior friendly.
Comment by u/RequirementWeary from discussion in poker
English Translation: In my humble opinion he may be the greatest tournament player of all time, but when he sits down at a cash table he's a fish.
Other players with a good chance of winning the title:
- Erik Seidel (USA): Ten WSOP bracelets and decades of experience. Despite his age, he continues to be consistently successful at the highest level.
- Xuan Liu (Canada): First woman to win Triton in history. Currently in strong form and with a growing presence at major events.
- Alex Foxen (USA): Two bracelets in 2024, including a win at WSOP Paradise. Tournament consistency at the highest level.
- Jesse Lonis (USA): Multiple high roller winner with a steady upward trend. One of the strongest US pros without a bracelet.
- Seth Davies (USA): Successful in high roller tournaments worldwide. Technically strong, calm at the table and always in top positions.
- Jason Koon (USA): Short-deck specialist and high-stakes regular. With over 63 million USD (around 55 million EUR) in live prize money, one of the most dangerous players in the field.
- Adrián Mateos (USA): Four WSOP bracelets. The most successful European tournament player in recent years.
- Justin Bonomo (USA): Third on the all-time money list with over USD 65 million (around EUR 57 million). High-roller dominator and constant factor in large fields.
No matter who wins in the end and regardless of who Controversies surrounding new regulations : The WSOP 2025 promises to be one of the most exciting and open editions in recent years.
