Exclusion for at least three months - even for life is possible

BetStop [Link to English] is intended to give Australian players the opportunity to exclude themselves from all types of gambling for a certain period of time.

Players should be able to decide for themselves how long they want to register with BetStop. This is completely free and very simple. The exclusion lasts at least three months, but can also be applied for for lifelich. Under certain conditions it is also possible to remove yourself from the register.

To do this, however, an affidavit must be submitted that the person was advised by a doctor or psychologist regarding this decision. The entry in the register will still remain for at least three months. There is no possibility to unsubscribe in advance.

New requirements for gambling providers

All licensed gambling providers are obliged to adhere to the entries in the register. That is why a new obligation to identify players will be introduced as part of BetStop.

If a player wants to register in an online casino, he must confirm his identity immediately. Previously, players had up to 72 hours to identify themselves. If a player is entered in the register, he cannot create an account for online or offline gambling.

In addition, providers should no longer be allowed to accept bets from players in the BetStop register. They would also have to commit to no longer sending marketing materials to people on the register. Providers are also obliged to mention BetStop on their website and in their advertising.

Self-exclusion register shows first successes in Great Britain

Self-exclusion registries, like BetStop, are not unique to Australia. GAMSTOP was launched in the UK in 2020. Players can be banned from all gambling websites and apps that have a UK license for a specific period of time, free of charge and without much hassle.

In November 2023 one was study [Link to English], which is intended to prove the success of GAMSTOP. In follow-up interviews with those affected who registered in the register in 2020, it was found that GAMSTOP could have contributed to reducing gambling-related damage. In addition, the majority of the people surveyed are still entered in the register three years later.

In Australia there is also a counterpart to the registers in Australia and Great Britain: the Player blocking system OASIS. Not only gamblers themselves, but also organizers and agents as well as relatives of problem gamblers can apply for a ban. This then applies, among other things, to arcades, sports betting, licensed online gambling, lotteries and other facilities that are subject to the State Treaty on Gambling.

How Australia is fighting gambling addiction

Gambling addiction is a major problem in Australia: the government has been working feverishly to combat it in recent years. For this the so-called was created National Consumer Protection Framework for Online Wagering [Link to English] introduced.

"BetStop will improve the lives of Australians by giving them the support they need to free themselves from interactive licensed betting. It is the latest of 10 measures being implemented as part of the National Online Betting Consumer Protection Framework." - Michelle Rowland MP, Communications Minister, Australia, Department of Social Services

Other measures include the fact that the Australian government has already banned the use of credit cards for online gambling. In addition, players now received a mandatory monthly overview of their stakes and winnings.

In November 2023 there were also rumors that Australia was planning to ban advertising for online gambling. However, there doesn't seem to be any confirmation of this yet.

It remains to be seen whether the Australian government's measures will have the desired success.
