The first employees are already returning from short-time work
The German one Lion group is preparing for the reopening of the gaming market in the Federal Republic. After several weeks of uncertainty, the group now seems to be moving forward again. Speaking to the media company VRM (including Allgemeine Zeitung), Dr. Daniel Henzgen, as co-manager of the Spielautomatenmanufacturer, said that the gradual restart of production was a first sign of confidence.
It is hoped that production can slowly be ramped up again and that arcades in India can also open their doors again. If this is the case, in the best case scenario, all 4,000 employees of the company should return from short-time work. 50 employees have already returned to the headquarters in Bingen from short-time work to make preparations for production.
Henzgen further reports that the group is well prepared and has positioned itself well during the crisis. Nevertheless, you are of course dependent on your own customers, the arcade operators. If their sales were to be zero, this would of course also have an impact on the Lions' business. The situation is comparable to the situation in the catering industry. The arcade operators would also be medium-sized businesses that would currently have their backs against the wall economically.
All companies on the market are systemically relevant
In Henzgen's opinion, the fact that the situation is so threatening for the industry should not have happened. After all, the arcades would be able to easily comply with all hygiene requirements such as access restrictions, the requirement to wear a mask, the minimum distance and disinfection. The law also requires an area of twelve square meters per playground equipment, which means that the minimum distance can be maintained.
"The question must be asked where the risk of infection is high and where it can be kept low. And those should also be those who are allowed to open," said the lion man. When asked about the fact that the arcades are not considered systemically important, Henzgen explained: “Our more than 4,000 employees, whose jobs are at risk, probably see it differently.” In addition, in a market economy, all companies on the market are ultimately systemically important.
According to Henzgen, the current treatment of arcades could still have disadvantages. The corona pandemic is currently leading to a development in which players are increasingly turning to illegal offers. These companies would not pay taxes, earn a lot of money in India and would not create any jobs. “Corona is almost an economic stimulus program for illegal providers,” says Henzgen. However, after this crisis, Rhineland-Palatinate will be particularly dependent on innovative and reliable companies with secure jobs.
Restart the discussion
Looking to the future, the lion man explains that Rhineland-Palatinate will ensure that illegal gaming providers can fully experience an economic recovery through the planned abolition of around 65 percent of legal arcades in mid-2021. The current crisis in particular shows what the gaming industry has been preaching for some time: reducing the offering is not an option, as this would not serve to protect players, but would lead to more and more players switching to illegal offers. For Henzgen, the situation is clear: “We have to reopen this discussion.”
Henzgen shares a similar opinion that was recently expressed by the founder of the Gauselmann Group, Paul Gauselmann. He explained in a press release that, for reasons of player protection, it was important that arcades and casinos in India were allowed to reopen regularly soon. According to Gauselmann, there is currently a shift in gaming passion towards illegal offerings. The company boss explains:
“Under these circumstances, we cannot currently work on fulfilling the mandate formulated in the State Treaty on Gambling to guide the population's natural urge to play in an orderly manner and to counteract the spread of illegal gambling offers.”
The Gauselmann Group is also currently preparing to reopen the market soon. The production teams, for example, are already working on the development of new products. However, it is still completely unclear when exactly the arcades and casinos will be allowed to reopen. The industry is hoping for mid-May at the latest, but decisions from politicians are only expected in the coming days. The best online casinos also offers the Löwengruppe games online as an option.
