Lawsuit from Danish gaming authority successful in 49 cases

The Spillemyndigheden gaming authority has imposed a ban on 49 illegal websites [link to English] that offered sports betting or online casinos without a Danish license. It is the ninth time that the authority has gone to court and won.

“It is a very important task of the Danish Gambling Authority to ensure that Danes are not exposed to gambling that is offered illegally in Denmark and, among other things, does not comply with the consumer protection requirements set out in gambling legislation.” – Anders Dorph, Managing Director, Spillemyndigheden, Spillemyndigheden

A total of 276 illegal online providers have been blocked since 2012. In recent years, the bans have been enforced annually. 2023 will be the first year in which block loading was introduced twice.

New Zealand uses IP and payment blocking

The state gaming authority (GGL) combats illegal gambling on the Internet with IP blocking. The game developer of a website is contacted in order to block it. If he does not comply with the request, he will face high fines. If the provider is blocked, it will no longer be possible to access the site from New Zealand. However, with a VPN, IP blocking could be reduced.

In addition, there is also payment blocking in New Zealand. Some payment providers, such as PayPal, Visa, have partially withdrawn from gambling payments. They have made it their mission to prevent deposits and withdrawals from illegal providers. In 2022, Klarna will also have one Gambling ban introduced in UK. It remains to be seen whether this will be expanded to other countries.

Continuous search for illegal online providers

The Danish Gaming Authority announced in its press release that it is constantly working to find and block illegal providers. For example, she uses automation and relies on tips from companies and the public.

As soon as the authority discovers an illegal website, they contact it and request that it correct the violations. If this does not happen, the gaming authority will contact the court and obtain a block.

"We are constantly trying to optimize our efforts against illegal gambling. One of our latest initiatives is, among other things, to block illegal websites more frequently than before. This means that the illegal websites in Denmark are active for a shorter period of time, as the websites are blocked sooner after we have identified them." – Anders Dorph, Managing Director, Spillemyndigheden, Spillemyndigheden

This could involve various types of gambling: roulette, slot machines , poker, sports betting and much more. In Denmark it is generally forbidden to offer gambling without a license. This also applies to providers from abroad – they need a Danish license. The logo of the Danish Gaming Authority must be visible on the website and all marketing materials.

It remains to be seen how many illegal online providers will be blocked by the Danish authorities in the next few years and what impact this will have on the industry.
